1) Background
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc was started in 1962 by Sam Walton as a local discount store. Along with Wal-Mart, other stores that started operating were Target, Woolworth (Woolco) and K-Mart. The key components of Wal-Mart (The Value Chain), which offers cheap prices than its competitors includes firm infrastructure like frugal culture, no regional offices and pleasant environment to work.
Wal-Mart grew rapidly during the 1980s due to diversification of the company. Wal-Mart’s fundamental business principles at that time were to provide “high-quality,” brand name merchandise at low-prices and to locate stores in small towns.
Wal-Mart centered on small-towns first, and the tried to move to large cities. This happened while other retailers centered on larger urban centers. However, as the economy faced a downturn, people wanted low price stores. Fur…(skip)
