goal(목표) 달성을 위한 행동화의 동기를 부여하는 욕구는 개인의 퍼스낼러티에 따라 다양하게 구성될 수 있으며, 맥클리랜드(D. McClelland)는 이러한 욕구들을 매슬로우의 욕구계층theory(이론) 중에서 상위 3단계에 속하는 욕구들을 선택하여 성취의 욕구(need for achievement : n-Ach), 권력의 욕구(need for power : n-Pow) 및 친화의 욕구(need for affiliation : n-Aff)로 설명(說明)하였다.
